All Amateur Radio operators in South Eastern CT and Western Rhode Island are invited to sign up for the Tri-City Amateur Radio Club 2020 Field Day Awards. Also there is an antenna building contest!

(Note Added 2020-06-02 Use of a balun would be acceptable, especially since it’s a good practice to use one. Matters not if it is home made or store bought.) Tri-City ARC is offering awards this year, due to the COVID-19 Health issues and our inability to get together for traditional Field Day activities. We will have awards for Technician, General and Extra class amateur radio operators. Categories will be voice, CW and digital. Please sign up at the bottom of this post. The time frame for participation is 2 PM on 27 June 2020 to 4 PM on 28 June 2020. Submission for awards will be by copies of paper logs or ADIF files. Please send submissions to W1RPQ@ARRL.net .

There will also be awards in each category for farthest QSO.

There will also be an antenna building contest. You will be given a kit with 100’ of wire, 2 insulators and a center isolator. The object of the contest is to build and demonstrate as many antennas that you can make from the kit. You are allowed to make only 1 cut to the wire. You can fold over the wire for different configurations. You must supply any rope or coax needed to operate the antenna. You must provide a drawing with specs of each antenna submitted, along with a picture of the SWR reading, showing the capability of each antenna. You can use an antenna analyzer or a picture of your radios SWR meter. No antenna tuners are allowed. Please send submissions to W1RPQ@ARRL.net . Please contact Bob Nazro, W1RPQ to pick up a kit prior to Field day at W1RPQ@ARRL.net. We have 10 kits available. You can begin building your antennas as soon as you pick up the kit. You will also qualify for super bonus points if you use your antenna for Field Day QSO’s.

Additional recognition will be provided for stations operating on 100% battery power, stations operating on solar power and remote stations. Please submit pictures to W1RPQ@ARRL.net. We will be posting these pictures on the Tri-City website during Field Day. We encourage all participants to send in a picture of your shack and antennas. We will get them posted on the website during Field Day.

While we may all be working Field Day alone or isolated, we can share our experience with one another throughout the weekend.

One final category is for Tri-City ARC members. The Ham that submits a log with the most contacts with other Tri-City ARC members will receive a special recognition.

    1. Darryl,
The powers that be say yes a balun would be acceptable, especially since it’s a good practice to use one. Matters not if it is home made or store bought.
